Taking care of our skin is certainly something our older selves will thank us for. I have been vegan for 25 years and although I have not just lived off of green juices I do feel that my food choices, copious amounts of (mainly filtered) water as well as using plant based skincare has helped to keep my skin looking the best it possibly can be.

As well as telling you about some fantastic vegan skincare must haves,  Dr Lucy Glancey also shares her expert skincare advice with us …

“I recommend using a gently cleanser twice a day without overdoing it. Avoid using hot water as it can strip the skin of its natural oil barrier meaning your skin will dry out quicker making it more itchy and flaky. Don’t just use a make-up wipe at the end of the day as this alone won’t cleanse your skin properly. It’s important to choose the right cleanser for your skin type. For sensitive skin I’d recommend using an hydrating, gentle cleanser.”

“For those with more oily, acne prone skin a salicylic acid based cleanser will help unclog the pores and remove excess oil. For those who tend to have dry skin, a cream cleanser can help your skin’s top layer retain more moisture. Start by Applying a small amount of cleanser into the palm of your hands and apply to the face, massage into the skin remembering the neck and décolletage area, rinse with lukewarm water or use a muslin cloth.  Pat your face dry before using a toner applied with a cotton pad which will gently remove any excess dirt and oil left on the skin. I’d follow this with a vitamin C serum before applying moisturizer, waiting 20 mins before applying an SPF of at least 30 if you’re heading outdoors.”

Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm

” I use this maybe 2/3 times a week as a hot cloth cleanse – it works especially well whilst relaxing in a bath as the steam works wonders.

I don’t tend to wear a lot of makeup but when I wear mascara this balm works fab to gently remove it with no irritation. I often also wear this when out walking the dogs if its particularly bitter and windy. It doubles as a lip balm and I’ve even used it on my dry and torn cuticles!”

And some final top advice from Dr Lucy Glancey founder of www.drglancey-clinics.com.

“Take the time to give yourself a home steam to relax, unwind and unclog the pores.

Exfoliating should be part of your skincare regime full stop.  I’d recommend using an exfoliator 2-3 times a week to get rid of any dead skin cells and clean out your pores. There’s a number of exfoliators out there to choose from depending on your skin type from glycolic acid to salicylic acid. However, proving really popular is the liquid exfoliator which uses chemicals like AHAs and BHAs to get rid of dead skin cells, leaving smoother looking fresher skin with an added glow. Because of their active ingredients, they are proving to be more effective than traditional exfoliators.

In addition to your normal skin care regime I’d recommend using a Vitamin C serum which are rich in antioxidants and therefore hydrating to the skin making it appear brighter, firmer and smoother whilst tackling enlarged pores. The vitamin C in the serum targets uneven skin tone and helps with anti- ageing. Molecules in serums are smaller than molecules in a moisturiser which allows the product to absorb much deeper into the pores, again creating a fresher, more youthful appearance. To get the best results from using a serum, cleanse and tone as normal before applying a few drops of serum into the palm of your hands then gently pat or moisturise into your skin. I’d recommend doing this twice a day before Finishing off with your daily moisturizer and SPF.

Having a proper cleansing routine, if done properly shouldn’t take long but to see the benefits it’s important to be consistent. So do make sure you cleanse twice a day, do make sure you’re using a moisturizer in the morning and at night, and always wear SPF even in winter.  A good routine should really only take 10 mins or so.”
