Britain could be fully vegetarian by later this century

Britain could be fully vegetarian by later this century

THE amount of meat being eaten in Britain is fast diminishing according to the latest Government agricultural figures.*

Viva! – Europe’s largest campaigning animal group – believe if current trends continue, the UK will be fully vegetarian by later this century**. The news gives an added boost to National Vegetarian Week later this month (May 18-24).

Figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) show that last year over 13 million fewer farmed land animals were slaughtered in the UK than the year before. The group maintains that the trend is continuing downwards, with nearly 50 million fewer killed in 2008 than in 2005.

Viva! also argue that this fall is not because we are importing more. Figures show that consumption of poultry meat in the UK last year fell by a massive 67,000 tonnes (four percent); pig meat consumption fell by a staggering 74,000 tonnes (down by over five per cent).

Viva! campaigns manager, Justin Kerswell, says: “It is great that so many British consumers are turning their backs on meat and going veggie. However, almost nine hundred million animals are still killed for meat each year in the UK, most of them living appallingly short lives in squalid conditions and facing a terrifying death so we clearly have a long way to go but we are winning. Concerns about animal cruelty, health and the state of the planet are growing daily and vegetarianism and veganism provides a solution to all of them. It’s needed like never before.”

Notes to Editors

According to Mintel (2006), 5-6 per cent of the population is now vegetarian and the number is rising. A 2007 survey for Linda McCartney Foods, found that around 10 per cent of Brits eat no red meat, and there is a huge amount of ‘meat reducers’, with 31 million people eating vegetarian most of the time. The number of vegans has increased ten fold in the last 10 years, up to a million ***.

The average Brit eats 11,047 animals in his or her lifetime: 1 goose, 1 rabbit, 4 cattle, 18 pigs, 23 seep and lambs, 28 ducks, 39 turkeys, 1,158 chickens, 3,593 shellfish and 6,182 fish. Viva! provides help for those wishing to give up or cut down on meat. Anyone can check their own animal slaughter rate at http://www.timetogoveggie.com

For more information on Viva!’s campaigns go to http://www.viva.org.uk.

For details on the figures in this media release please see http://statistics.defra.gov.uk/esg/publications/auk/2008/excel.asp (note: these are the most up to date figures provided by Defra and will next be updated in March 2010). Or contact Viva!’s press officer Helen Rossiter or Justin Kerswell for a breakdown on 0117 944 1000 or justin@viva.org.uk.

** According to Defra statistics 881,801,000 land animals (chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, sheep and cattle) were slaughtered in the UK in 2008. 881,801,000 divided by 13,035,000 (the number it went down in 2008) = 67.64 (the number of years before Britain goes fully vegetarian if current trends continue).

Morning Has Broken (Your Healthy Diet)

Monday, April 27. 2009

Well at VeggieVision TV we say – have half a freshly squeezed lemon in warm water - grab some fruit, Brazil nuts, walnuts, have a fab smoothie with fresh and frozen fruits or an easy green drink!

Delicious!

It’s pitched as the most important meal of the day, but with only 8 per cent of cereals getting a green light for healthy sugar levels, many Britons are waking up to poor nutrition, a new Which? report has uncovered*.

Adults and children have a hard job finding a healthy start to the day, as cereal companies continue to add large amounts of sugar to their top brands.

31 cereals out of the 100 looked at contained more than four teaspoons of sugar per recommended serving and only one of the 28 cereals specifically marketed to children was found not to be high in sugar (but was still high in salt)**.

Morrisons Choco Crackles topped the sweet mountain with more sugar per serving than a Cadbury’s Chocolate Flake***, followed  closely by Kellogg’s Coco Pops Moons and Stars, Frosties and Ricicles which were over a third (37 per cent) pure sugar.

Many brands thought of as healthy, such as Kellogg’s All Bran, Bran Flakes and Special K did little to bowl over Which? researchers.  Starting the day with Special K, for example, would be almost the sugar equivalent to waking up to a bowl of Tesco’s Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake Ice Cream****.

The report Going Against the Grain, published today, analysed 100 leading UK cereals.  Although sugar levels remained high, positive changes could be seen with reductions in salt content. Despite this, 100g of Tesco Special Flakes was still found to contain the same amount of salt as 100g of Walkers Ready Salted crisps*****.

Other issues included confusing labelling, and questionable health and nutrition claims allowing some companies to promote a wholesome image for their brand, while failing to emphasise the high sugar or salt content******.

Sue Davies, Chief Policy Adviser, Which? said:

“Breakfast is important, and some cereals deserve their healthy image, but most simply don’t.  It’s especially shocking that almost all those targeted at children are less healthy.  With such little choice, it’s a daily struggle for consumers.

“Cereal manufacturers need to wake up to the fact that people want to eat healthily and provide them with the means to do so by reducing sugar and salt levels and making labelling clearer.  With over a billion pounds spent on cereals every year, it’s time they rose to the occasion. ”

Banks should throw in the towel, says Which?

Sunday, March 1. 2009

Hey!

We get tons of great media releases and have decided to add the best ones on here while we sort out the system that will enable us to share tons more with you - We thought that this may be of interest.....

K x

Banks should throw in the towel, says Which?

As the judges in the bank charges test case appeal rule in favour of the OFT,

Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith, says:

“The courts have made it clear the banks should now throw in the towel. This case has been going on too long and it’s about time they tried to regain some of their dignity and paid customers their dues.

“This whole saga has severely damaged the banks’ reputations. If they try to appeal in the face of such a clear decision, they will suffer further losses in the court of public opinion.”

What will happen next?

The banks have the option to appeal the decision at the House of Lords. If this happens then the FSA waiver* is likely to remain in place during the appeals process. This means that all pending cases in the county courts or with FOS are likely to stay on hold and banks will continue to charge overdraft fees.

If the banks decide not to appeal, then their Terms & Conditions will be assessed for fairness. Where current terms are unfair, the OFT will agree a fair charging regime with the banks – effectively placing a cap on the level of overdraft fees. This will be similar to the approach taken for credit card late payment fees.

*The FSA waiver, which has been in place since the test case was announced in July 2007, means that banks can continue to charge people for slipping into an unauthorised overdraft while consumer complaints remain on hold. If the banks decide to appeal, then it is highly likely that the waiver will remain in place until the appeals process has run its course.

Which? is the leading independent consumer champion in the UK. We provide impartial, expert information on products and services in our magazines, books and online to help consumers make more informed choices, and we campaign on issues that matter to all consumers, from food to finances, health to estate agents. A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye

Monday, January 26. 2009

Hello!

A huge thanks to the guys that sent this in - We just think its FAB! Is it all completely true? - check it out and enjoy either way!

Cheers Karin x

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye.

The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red.

The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart.
Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums.

Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak.

These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs.

Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow.

Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries

Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just l ike the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like the body's cells.

Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

You can check out more here too - Enjoy!
